The California Endowment Awards Grant to DIY Girls

Girls will design interactive health exhibits with support from The California Endowment

We’re excited to announce that The California Endowment has awarded a grant to us!  The grant will be used to train participants from our after school program for 5th grade girls in the Pacoima community of Los Angeles to design and build interactive games and exhibits that address community health issues.

After going through a brainstorming session where they will identify health issues affecting their community, girls will conceptualize an interactive exhibit design that addresses a health issue. They will work in small teams to build it during the after school program. The project will train girls in game design, coding and hands-on building of an exhibit. The project will culminate with a showcase for families where they will have the opportunity to interact and learn about community health issues from the interactive exhibits.

About our After school Program

The DIY Girls after school program serves 5th grade girls in Los Angeles that attend low-income elementary schools. We aim to have an effect on the girls as they enter adolescence and start to form career interests. We seek to provide an early experience that will give girls the tools and confidence to persist and make informed educational decisions. Our goal is for all of our participants to enter middle school with strong technical skills, self-confidence and information on what classes to take to continue learning about computer science, engineering and technology.
